How these times are calculated

Prayer times are solar events, not a schedule anyone publishes centrally. Dhuhr is fixed by the sun crossing the meridian, Maghrib by sunset, and Sunrise by sunrise; these barely differ between methods. Fajr and Isha are the contested ones, because they depend on how far the sun must sit below the horizon for twilight to begin or end — and different authorities have settled on different answers.

For Riyadh, Nour Daily resolves to the Umm al-Qura University method, maintained by Umm al-Qura University, Makkah. It places Fajr at 18.5 degrees of sun depression and, unusually, sets Isha at a fixed interval of 90 minutes after Maghrib instead of at a sun angle. The official timetable of Saudi Arabia. Unusually, it does not compute Isha from a sun angle at all: it fixes Isha a set interval after Maghrib, which is why the gap between Maghrib and Isha stays the same all year here while it stretches and shrinks elsewhere.

Asr: the standard and Hanafi opinions

Asr is the one prayer whose start time depends on a juristic position rather than an astronomical constant. The majority position holds that Asr begins when an object's shadow exceeds the length of the shadow it cast at solar noon by the object's own height. The Hanafi school holds that it begins when the shadow exceeds that noon shadow by twice the object's height, which always falls later.

In Riyadh the difference today is 63 minutes: 15:22 under the standard opinion, 16:25 under the Hanafi one. The gap is not constant — it widens in winter, when the sun is low and shadows lengthen slowly, and narrows in summer. Both columns appear in the monthly table above so you can follow whichever your community follows without recalculating anything.

Daylight, clock changes and the length of the day

Riyadh keeps a fixed offset of UTC+03:00 all year, so nothing on this page needs adjusting for a clock change. The only movement in the times is the sun's own.

Qibla direction from Riyadh

From Riyadh the Kaaba lies on a great-circle bearing of 244.7 degrees clockwise from true north — approximately west-southwest — at a distance of about 796 km. This is the shortest path over the surface of the earth, which is why the direction can look wrong on a flat map: from northern latitudes the great circle to Makkah bends noticeably compared to the straight line a rectangular projection suggests.

If you are aligning with a magnetic compass rather than a phone's true-north reading, correct for local magnetic declination first; in some places that is several degrees.

How accurate is this timetable?

Calculated times can differ by a few minutes from local mosque timetables. Three things account for most of the difference. Mosques often round to the nearest five minutes and add a safety margin to Fajr. Some apply a fixed local correction agreed by their committee. And a mosque a few kilometres away from the coordinates used here will genuinely have slightly different times — a degree of longitude is about four minutes.
